Engineering & Design

A Culture of Innovation. An Expectation of Excellence.

Combining decades of hands-on field and operations experience with interdisciplinary engineering knowledge, CWA produces innovative designs that can minimize construction and lifecycle costs while producing a higher-quality finished product. Our technical design teams thrive on a culture of innovation that expects excellence on all projects, regardless of size.

As a multidisciplinary company, we have the in-house expertise needed to deliver complete designs from concept development through detailed engineering, construction and post-construction services, and beyond, into continued operational and maintenance support. Our capabilities cover the following disciplines:

  • Structural.
  • Marine structural.
  • Civil.
  • Mechanical.
  • Piping.
  • Electrical.
  • Instrumentation and controls.

Advanced 3D Modelling Technology

Empowered Design. Enhanced Collaboration.

Using state-of-the-art 3D technology, CWA improves the safety and functionality of designs for both greenfield and brownfield sites.

Instead of relying solely on computers, our designs are informed by real-world experiences, allowing us to calibrate actual operating conditions into the model.

CWA's full suite of capabilities includes:

  • 3D scanning.
  • 3D modelling.
  • Finite element analysis (FEA).
  • Discrete element method (DEM) modelling.
  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

Greenfield Sites

CWA uses 3D technology to model entire greenfield sites for site layout and general arrangement improvements, design optimization, interference checking, simplified 2D drawing generation, and walk-throughs/fly-overs. The models are used for early reviews of the design with stakeholders to ensure that the design meets operational, safety, and maintenance requirements. This allows stakeholders to collaborate in the design process to a level that is difficult to achieve with traditional 2D models.

Brownfield Sites

Using 3D laser scans, CWA creates precise 3D models of existing equipment and infrastructure for brownfield modifications. Inserting the 3D models of new designs into the existing model allows CWA's engineers to ensure the constructability and viability of the design early in the design process. 3D models are particularly helpful for coordinating between disciplines and avoiding interferences, especially when designing complex mechanical assemblies with moving parts.

Customized Dust Management Solutions

Improve Safety. Boost Efficiency. Reduce Costs.

CWA has developed specialized expertise in the design of passive dust control systems including soft-handling conveyor transfers that minimize dust generation. Our designs incorporate passive dust mitigation techniques, reducing the need for more costly active dust control measures.

By combining state-of-the-art techniques such as discrete element method (DEM) modelling and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), we have developed an effective tool for the advanced analysis of material and air flow trajectories in bins and transfers. Our models are fully dynamic and involve the influence of moving surfaces such as gates, diverters, conveyor belts, apron feeders, etc. Using this method, transfers can be designed to reduce turbulence, in turn minimizing hazardous dust emissions and product degradation.

Our expertise in dust management extends to systems that incorporate any or all of the following:

  • Monitoring of wind velocity and direction
  • Dust sprays
  • Chemical systems
  • Enclosures
  • Wind fences
  • Cyclones
  • Baghouses
  • Spill trays
  • Washdown systems
