Project details:
CWA was engaged by Agrium Inc. (now Nutrien Limited) to conduct a review of the existing mill structure in the wet milling facility at their potash mine in Vanscoy, Saskatchewan. Following the inspection, CWA was asked to perform the conceptual and detailed design and provide construction support services for a retrofit of the existing concrete floor systems to increase the processing plant’s lifespan.
Challenges:
The existing structural steel below the concrete floor system required extensive repairs and replacements. Repairs were completed during a plant shutdown when hoist wells were unavailable and took place around other work that was being completed at the same time and in the same areas.
Solutions:
Alternative materials were used in the design of the repairs to provide protection against chemical attack. The design also included the use of innovative steel/concrete composite systems and steel repairs to create time and cost savings.
CWA assisted with construction planning to complete the work within the shutdown window. On-site services included structural steel inspections with same-day turnaround for repair designs.
CWA also designed a temporary monorail to lift materials into the building through a temporary opening in the wall cladding
