Project details

On an annual basis, 2.3 million tonnes of mineral concentrates were being shipped out of the Port of Callao, located within the Lima Metropolitan Area in Peru. The opening of new mines and production increases at existing mines were expected to increase throughput to as much as six million tonnes per year. The existing operations, which used trucks to transport material from inland stockpiles to the port, would not be able to accommodate the increased throughput.

Solutions

As the prime consultant, CWA performed the basic engineering design of a new lead, zinc, and copper concentrate handling system including a four kilometre-long enclosed pipe conveyor, surge bins, and a 2,000 t/h linear shiploader to handle the future throughput of 6 Mt/y. The new system eliminates truck traffic through the city and reduces the environmental impact of mineral concentrate transportation and shipping.
