Project details

Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) planned to install a series of solar panels and a wind turbine at the coast guard base on Merry Island, a small island near the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. CWA was engaged to design a support frame and foundation system for the solar panels, as well as the foundation for the wind turbine.

Challenges

As DFO planned to install similar solar panels in other locations along the coast of British Columbia, the solar panel frame and foundation needed to be designed for the worst-case environmental loads in the coastal region of the province.

Solutions

CWA performed the structural design of the solar panel frame, the solar panel foundation, and the wind turbine foundation. The solar panel frame and foundation were designed to withstand the wrost-case environmental loads in the coastal region of British Columbia.
